SELECT Past President and Honorary Member David Smith has been recognised for his contribution to the local community with a special award.

The former Glasgow & West of Scotland Branch Chair received a Provost Community Award in honour of his community, church and youth activities in the Rutherglen area.

David was presented with his award by Provost Bert Thomson at South Lanarkshire Council’s headquarters in Hamilton on 1 October.

He was among 35 recipients who received a trophy and certificate for their contribution to community groups, churches, community councils, youth programmes, sport and recreation, fund raising and gardening and environmental work.

David was nominated for the award by Councillor Margaret Cowie, who said: “For more than 60 years, David has played a key role in activities across Rutherglen. A dedicated member of West and Wardlawhill Church, he serves as Presbytery Elder and Fabric Convenor, helping to support and strengthen the life of the congregation.

“David has long been at the heart of the local remembrance activities, coordinating the annual Remembrance Parade and Cenotaph service. His commitment to young people is equally impressive, having served as a Scout Leader before progressing to District Commissioner for Cambuslang and later Area Commissioner for Greater Glasgow, as well as Religious Adviser for the area.

“Through his involvement in initiatives such as the Rutherglen 900 celebrations, David continues to make a significant contribution to community life.”

David joined SELECT in 1990 and was elected Chair of the Glasgow & West of Scotland Branch in 1998 before serving as President between 2005 and 2007.

He received the SELECT Lifetime Achievement Award at the association’s awards in 2018 before being made an Honorary Member at the 2023 AGM.

Provost Thomson said: “These awards acknowledge and highlight the dedication of those who give so much of their own time to make others’ lives that bit better.

“Our winners’ work is appreciated so much by so many people in the communities where their volunteering is absolutely invaluable.”
