SELECT donates vintage electrical equipment to Glasgow Clyde College

SELECT’s Technical team has handed over a treasure trove of vintage electrical equipment to give young learners a hands-on insight into the evolution of technology.
The association donated a variety of historical protection devices, switchgear, accessories and test equipment to Glasgow Clyde College (GCC) to give learners a chance to view what was historically installed and utilised and how technology has evolved over time.
Previously archived at The Walled Garden, and dating back to the 1930s, the equipment was handed over by Director of Technical Services Robert McGoogan to college Curriculum Managers Anthony McGinley and Barry Faichnie on 28 October.
Anthony said: “On behalf of, Glasgow Clyde College, Barry and I would like to say a huge thank you to SELECT for their generous donation of archived switchgear which provides a valuable insight into the evolution of our industry.
“These legacy devices reflect the standards, practices and safety expectations of their time, while also highlighting the electrical hazards that electricians have always needed to recognise and manage.
“While modern regulations, technology and working practices have significantly improved safety, many of the
fundamental dangers associated with electricity remain unchanged.
“The quality of workmanship, robust construction and engineering excellence evident in these historic artefacts stand as a testament to the skill and professionalism of previous generations, offering an important opportunity to appreciate both, how far the industry has progressed and the enduring importance of safe working practices.
“It also stands to remind our next generation of apprentices, of the high standards which our industry beholds.”
