Golfers from across Scotland gathered in Perthshire for this year’s President’s Cup, which saw the East of Scotland team retain the bragging rights for the fourth year in a row.

Team captain and SELECT Vice President Mike Stark was handed the silver trophy by association President Alistair Grant at the end of another closely-fought event at Dunblane New Golf Club.

After the original event in July had to be postponed due to heavy rain, 28 golfers of all abilities battled the fairways and greens in the sunshine on Monday 28 August.

Split into the traditional East and West teams, the 58th competition – which was sponsored for the first time by Luceco Group – saw prizes for the longest drive and nearest the pin, plus a special ‘endeavour’ award for the highest round.

After another extremely narrow contest, the East team retained the trophy by 223 points to 198, with Mike being presented with the cup after high tea in the clubhouse.

Mike, who is Director of Data & Networks for Atalian Servest AMK Ltd, also received a bottle of malt whisky and engraved glass to mark the victory, with the three best performers on each team also taking home prizes.

Alistair said: “The President’s Cup is always an excellent day, and it was good to see so many Members and guests return to the fairways after the original event had to be postponed.

“The competitors certainly made up for lost time and it was great to catch up with so many Members in the clubhouse afterwards. I’d also like to thank the Luceco Group for sponsoring the event and helping to ensure that everyone enjoyed an excellent day.”

Ian Davidson of Member firm Ideal Electrical Solutions Ltd, who posted the top score of the day for the triumphant East team, said: “I’m incredibly honoured to have helped my team win this year’s President Cup, but it’s not just about the competition – it’s also about coming together to support SELECT.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved – organisers and fellow competitors – for making the event such a meaningful and enjoyable experience and I’m looking forward to defending the title with the East team next year.”

The East team’s victory means they have won the trophy 28 times since the competition was established in 1914, with the West of Scotland clinching it on 30 occasions.

After the original competition was halted in 1932, it was resurrected in 1977 and has been contested annually ever since, apart from 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
