The fourth SELECT Professionals’ Day was the biggest yet, with more than 50 senior industry decision-makers braving high winds at the V&A Dundee to enjoy a lively debate about the latest developments in ventilation

It was quite fitting that the weather for this year’s Professionals’ Day was a blustery affair as the topic up for debate was air quality in Scottish buildings.

A breezy day awaited delegates at the V&A Dundee as they gathered to discuss which way the wind is blowing when it comes to ventilation in construction.

Once again SELECT was proud to play host to some of Scotland’s most senior professionals as they shared ideas and gained invaluable insights into the issue.

Hosted at the iconic landmark, the event once again brought together a wide variety of decision-makers from across the construction industry and other sectors.

Representatives from housing associations, local authorities and higher education facilities gathered at the V&A on Thursday 18 September, along with a number of architects, surveyors, specifiers and construction project managers.

The free event – which was supported by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) – featured three topical presentations.

First up was Gregor Morrison, Relationship Manager at Associate Member Aico, who delivered a discussion on mould and Awaab’s Law, and what Scotland can expect when similar legislation is introduced north of the Border.

This was followed by a discussion on practical ventilation solutions presented by Ubbink’s UK Ventilation Lead, Craig Cundey, who then fielded plenty of questions as his presentation really got the room talking.

After a short break it was time for our third presentation of the morning, with BEAMA’s Director of External Affairs Kelly Butler heading north to provide an insight into ventilation from the trade body perspective.

Kelly then remained on stage as a panellist in our open panel discussion and Q&A, hosted by SELECT Managing Director Alan Wilson and featuring our Director of Technical Services Bob Cairney.

Also fielding questions was Mike Heffron, CEO of tenement charity Under One Roof, and Gloria Lo, who is a Chartered Architect with OiSA Designs and lecturer and tutor at the University of Edinburgh.

There was plenty of lively debate as the panellists fielded questions on the quality of ventilation in Scottish homes, the health risks linked to poor air quality in Scotland and the potential impact of stricter standards.

As well as presentations, delegates took the opportunity to chat with our exhibitors, who included Associate Members Aurora, Dimplex, Electrium, Flexel and National Ventilation.

Managing Director Alan Wilson said: “With the introduction of Awaab’s Law south of the Border in October, and plans for similar legislation in Scotland, ventilation has never been more topical in construction.

“As Scotland’s largest construction trade association, SELECT was therefore delighted to facilitate the conversation and get industry experts talking about what will no doubt be a hot topic for many years to come.”
