Back to the classroom

After six months of online learning, SELECT has introduced a range of health and safety measures as training returns to The Walled Garden with our popular 18th Edition course

After introducing a range of comprehensive COVID-19 safety measures, we are delighted to be restarting partial training sessions at our headquarters outside Edinburgh.

Staggered start times, reduced class sizes, clear signage and a range of hygiene measures are all now in

place as The Walled Garden prepares to receive delegates once again.

The new measures will enable us to safely deliver the practical part of our SQA Customised Award in Initial Verification to BS 7671 Course (18th Edition).

Also known as our 209 course, this is broken into three parts, all of which candidates must successfully complete before we can apply for their certificate from SQA.

1. Introduction to BS 7671 (online)

The online session provides a basic introduction to BS 7671 to ensure delegates can successfully navigate and find key information from the latest version of the IET Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2018. The session takes a few hours to complete and can be completed in stages.

To complete the online course, candidates will need access to Requirements for Electrical Installations (18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations) BS 7671:2018 (blue book).

2. Initial Verification of Electrical Installations to BS 7671:2018 (online)

The second and third parts of the 209 course are spread across two days, with the first day an online session dealing with the following principles:

  • Inspection of new installations

  • Testing of new installations including continuity of conductors, insulation resistance, polarity, earth electrode resistance, earth fault loop impedance, prospective fault current and RCDs test

  • Virtual demonstration of inspection and testing procedures and interpretation of results

  • Virtual demonstration of results obtained to complete a schedule of inspections and schedule of test results

  • Review of the certification requirements for new installations and additions and alterations as confirmed in Chapter 64

  • Two multiple-choice assessments.

3. Practical session (The Walled Garden)

Held at SELECT HQ, the final part of the course is an in-person session. It takes around two hours and consists of a mix of practical exercises and certification using test board simulators.

Candidates will be given either a 9.30am or 1.30pm allocated time when they book their place on the course and there will be a reduced class size, with only a maximum of four people in the training room, including the SELECT tutor.

We are delighted to be able to offer this course to Members as we continue to move forward and deliver more training. We’re still delivering as much as we can virtually, but Members can be reassured that if they do visit The Walled Garden for a practical session, delegates and tutors will be working in a safe environment.
