Keep up-to-date with SELECT training
Nominated Qualified Supervisors of SELECT Member companies are required to refresh their BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations 17th Edition) training every five years.
The requirement for Qualified Supervisors to undertake assessed BS 7671 training within this period reflects the regularity with which the IET Wiring Regulations are updated.
Within the last five years, several new amendments to the BS 7671 have been issued.
Amendments were published in 2011, 2013 and 2015.
The Amendments to the IET Wiring Regulations are needed to reflect the pace of change that continues around us. Regular refresher training is essential to ensure that any updates and changes become embedded in the industry.
The three main drivers for change within the IET Wiring Regulations are:
Continued harmonisation with European Standards
Advancements in technology
Safety concerns – either improvements or responses to incidents
We offer a range of BS 7671 courses and all of our SQA certificated BS 7671 courses meet the requirement for Qualified Supervisors.
One of the courses that we have been delivering regularly throughout this year is the SQA [SELECT] Customised Award in Inspection & Testing.
This course has been accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority. This two-day programme covers Initial Verification on day one and Periodic Inspection on day two. This SQA Customised Awards has been credit rated by the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF).
This qualification sits at level 7 on the SCQF framework. One of the drivers for Members undertaking this training is to allow them to prepare to meet the demand for Periodic Inspection & Testing that will arise from private house rentals. Within Scotland, there is a new requirement for all private landlords to make sure that their rented property is electrically safe by ensuring that Periodic Inspections are conducted on their private rented property at least every five years or before each new tenancy.
This requirement is set out in the Housing Scotland Act and applies from the 1st of December. The guidance set out within the IET Wiring Regulations stipulates that periodic inspection and testingshall be undertaken by a skilled person (or persons), competent in such work. Attending short trainingcourses, is one factor in maintaining competence. Training also helps ensure that electricians are prepared to carry out this type of assessment.
Periodic Inspection is not just a “common sense” activity and indeed, many of the calls into our Technical helpline are on Periodic Inspection.
The most common questions/ problems we hear about are:
How to report and advise on older installations that do not comply with current standards
Questions on coding and how to correctly code an installation
Questions about the correct methods to undertake a Periodic Inspection – a methodical approach can save time & money while the wrong approach can be costly Documentation – wrong paperwork is a common problem
Our two-day SQA Customised Award in Inspection and Testing is the ideal course for electricians who want to build their knowledge and practical skills in Initial Verification and Periodic Inspection including knowledge of the certification process. This course will help delegates to gain an understanding of the requirements contained in the latest version of BS 7671 in relation to this type of work.
Underpinning all of this is the fact that the Electrical Engineering Training Foundation (EETF) has set the training grant at 40 per cent this year.
