Eric Rae hands over to Kevin Griffin

SELECT’s Technical Update day and AGM was recently held in Stirling’s River House Conference Centre. Highlights included the appointment of Kevin Griffin as new SELECT president and planned changes to BS 7671 in its 18th Edition

More than 50 SELECT Members packed into the River House Conference Centre in Stirling on 7 June to see the appointment of SELECT’s new officebearer team.

Kevin Griffin, who has been influential in SELECT activity in the Lanarkshire area for many years, was appointed as president, succeeding Eric Rae of Turriff, Aberdeenshire.

Kevin runs Logic Systems Fire & Security Ltd, which specialises in providing security solutions from its base in East Kilbride.

His vice-president is Kenny Duncan of NES (Scotland) in Inverness, while Eric Rae will also continue to play his part in the officebearer team as immediate past president.

Kevin has been chairman of the Lanarkshire branch of SELECT on a number of occasions and has been closely involved with the Fire & Security Association, which SELECT runs with its sister organisation, the Electrical Contractors’ Association.

He said his first priorities would be to support and encourage the existing work of the SELECT secretariat and to make sure that members are fully involved in the activities of the organisation and that they benefit from its campaigns.

As part of the event, Newell McGuiness, SELECT Managing Director, made a presentation on future plans for the association.

He focused on the important role that SELECT plays in the electrotechnical industry and said that it was important for the association to look ahead to ensure that it remained best placed to serve the need of its Members.

As part of the future plans, Newell explained that SELECT would be adopting a new thematic goal – SELECT: excellence in skills – that would be underpinned by three defining objectives:

  • Regulating the industry

  • Delivering quality member services

  • Leading training and development.

  • More details will follow in future editions of CABLEtalk.

In addition to the appointment of a new president and SELECT update, SELECT’s Head of Technical Services, Dave Forrester, and Bob Cairney, our Technical Standards Adviser, spoke about the proposed new wiring regulations and the impact they could have on Members. Details of this presentation are summarised here.
